The trip up to French Island was an interesting one. I’ve never ventured to that side of town before.
What was I doing on French Island?
Bandicoots are an endangered species and are threatened by habitat loss and introduced species (foxes and cats). So the researcher who I was volunteering for, has released a small populations of bandicoot on French Island to see if they can survive and thrive there. And if the data is good, they will be fully re-introduced here! We didn’t manage to catch any bandicoots on this trip, but here is what they look like.
We put out 70 traps every afternoon and check them the next morning. I helped to prepare the bait used for the trap and apparently bandicoots love peanut butter, honey and oats!
