12 tips to get you through Week 12

Eeep, how is it Week 12?

Uni has been full of assignments lately. I took last week off blogging to concentrate on my studies and to enjoy life in general (but it’s nice to be back!).

I finished a big group assignment last week (worth 40%), and it feels like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders (phew). Now, I just have to smash out the final few assignments before I can focus on exams.

But hey, the end of semester is near. We’re on the home stretch!

In light of that, here are 12 quick tips to get you through Week 12:

1. Drink moar water, less coffee

Yes yes, we love coffee. But don’t overdo it. Coffee dehydrates your body, so don’t forget to keep your fluid intake up.

Also – having a ‘cut off’ time for coffee helps with getting a good night’s rest.

2. Get organised with to-do lists

Don’t underestimate the power of a to-do list. To-do lists may help you visualise how much work needs to be done, and keeps you on track with your progress.

3. Back up your work

Imagine the hours you spent on an assignment, and your computer crashes and you lose everything? Yeah, it’s happened to a lot of us before. So make sure you back up your work, save multiple copies of it, email it to yourself, put a copy on your USB…etc.

4. Set a reminder alarms when studying

It’s very easy to lose track of time when you’re studying. So I set time limits to my study, and I set an alarm to remind me of those limits. It’s quite handy to help keep track of time!

5. You need to sleep

A tired, worn-out you is not going to end well. Look after yourself and get some proper rest.

If you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, try sticking to a routine of waking up and going to bed at regular times. Establishing a good sleeping pattern now will help you in the lead up to exams.

6. If you’re feeling stressed, get some fresh air.

If you have too many thoughts running through your head, or just need a break from studying – a walk around campus can help clear your mind.

Or hit the gym! Melbourne Uni Sports run free fitness classes every Friday lunchtime.

7. Prioritise your workload

If one assignment is worth 30%, and the other is worth 10%…obviously you’d spend more time working on the assignment that’s worth 30% right?

Get your priorities straight, allocate your time on different assignments wisely.

8. Find a good place to study

If you need somewhere quiet to study at Uni, try studying at the silent zones in the libraries. They’re usually located on the higher levels :)

And a reminder that if you’re studying late at uni, you can organise a security escort to keep you company while you walk from the library to the tram stop/college/car etc. Strange things happen at night, and it’s better to be safe than sorry. And you should also download the UniSafe app just in case.

Or if you can’t study at uni, stay home! Just find somewhere that is distraction-free, and somewhere you feel comfortable studying at.

9. Don’t shut off the world

Yes, studying may be your top priority right now. But you can’t shut off the world. Check in with your friends once in a while, give your family a call from time to time.

10. Ask for help if you need it

If you are struggling to understand the lecture content, email your lecturer/tutor to ask for some advice. Or, ask to arrange a time to see them to have a chat about it. OR, ask your friends in that class. Sometimes your friends can explain it to you in words you understand.

And of course – Academic Skills and Counselling are available to help too.

11. Give yourself some love

All work, no play makes one rather cranky. Reward yourself once in a while. Indulge in a treat, watch your fav tv show, go to the movies…do what makes you happy!

After spending all that time studying, you deserve to treat yourself.

12. Celebrate the end of semester!

Before going on to tackle exam stuff, do take time to celebrate the end of semester 2. You’ve made it through 12 weeks of uni! You did great :)

And for some of you, this may be your final semester – so congrats!

Go on, and make the most of the last week of semester.

I love number 1, cause it’s so true. Lots of coffee, that we forget to drink water.

Number 3. Totally happened to me last week and gave me a lot of unnecessary stress :(

Also number 6, studying in the open is pretty cool too. There’s quite a few nice grassy spots outside University Square and 1888 building to lay down and study. Beats sitting in a stuffy computer lab.
